Journal Prompt


Memoir Journals: Write to explore you and your culture

1.     Describe one thing you're really good at (sport, hobby, talent).
2.     Write your “bucket list” – things you’d like to do or experience before you “kick the bucket.” This is an American phrase meaning to die.
3.     Describe the most vivid dream you’ve ever had. Why was it significant?
4.     Describe your favorite place to be. Why is it your favorite place to be? What does it look, sound, smell, and feel like?
5.     Who is your hero? Why are they your hero?
6.     Who or what had the most influence on shaping you into the person you are today?
7.     What is your favorite art form? Music, painting, sculptures, dancing, woodworking, metalsmithing, poetry, knitting, fashion, cooking? Why? Do you just observe it, or do you create it?
8.     Tell me one of your favorite stories (fairy tales, folktale, ghost stories) from your culture. Why is it your favorite?
9.     Where do you see yourself ten years from now? What will you be doing? Where will you be living?
10.  Write about your favorite memory or most significant time of your life. Why is it so important to you?
11.  What would most people be surprised to learn if they got to know you better?
12.  Describe your favorite ways to relieve stress. Why do they make you feel better? Give a specific example of when they’ve helped.
13.  What is a costume of your culture that you wish other countries would adopt? Explain your reasoning.
14.  A foreign visitor has only one day to spend in your country. Where should this visitor go? What should he do? Explain why.
15.  If you were asked to send one thing to represent your country to an international exhibition, what would you choose? Why?

Scenario Journals: Write to explore your imagination
  1. Imagine you had a thousand dollars, but you couldn't keep it. You had to give it away to a person or charity. Who would you give it to? What would you want them to do with it?
  2. If you could have lunch with any famous person who would it be? What would you talk about with this person?
  3. Which superpower would you most like to have-- invisibility, super strength, or the ability to fly? Describe what kinds of things you would do with your powers.
  4. Choose a poem you like. Take the last line and use it as the first line of a new poem.
  5. Write about the color of hunger.
  6. Imagine you’re in a room full of people, and you’re blind. Describe what you experience, the room, and the people.
  7. If you could study any subject that you’ve never had a chance to study, what would it be and why?

Opinion Journals: Write to explore your ideas
1.     Who is more influential on a child’s success in school: Classmates or the child’s parents? Explain your answer.
2.     Which would you choose: A high-paying job with long hours or a lower-paying job with more free time for family and friends? Why?
3.     Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Modern technology is creating a single world culture. Explain your answer.
4.     Some universities require students to study many subjects. Others require students to focus only on one subject. Which is better?
5.     Should boys and girls attend separate schools? Use specific reasons and examples to defend your answer.
6.     Do you think the government should be allowed to censor the media? Why or why not?
