Sentence Types

Sentence Variety
Simple Sentence - ______________________________________________________________________
Akron has many parks.
Compound Sentence - __________________________________________________________________
a). FANBOY = Akron has many international restaurants, so ELI students can get a taste of home.
b). FANMEN = Akron has many international restaurants; thus, ELI students can get a taste of home.
c). Semi Colon* = Akron has many international restaurants; ELI students can get a taste of home.
*The relationship between both independent clauses must be very strong.

Complex Sentence - ____________________________________________________________________
a). IND + DEP = ELI students succeed because they study hard.
b). DEP + IND = Because they study hard, ELI students succeed.

Common Sentence Mistakes
Run On - ____________________________________________________________________________
L The university has many new buildings the library is old.
Comma Splice - ______________________________________________________________________
L The university has many new buildings, the library is old.
Fix it:
a). FANBOYS = The university has many new buildings, but the library is old.
b). FANMEN = The university has many new buildings; however, the library is old.
c). SUBORDINATOR = Although the university has many new buildings, the library is old.


Fragment - __________________________________________________________________________

L As we drove to Cleveland.
Fix it:
a). Add IND Clause = As we drove to Cleveland, we didn’t get lost once.


Parallel Structure - ___________________________________________________________________

                L We read, write, and are learning vocabulary.

Fix it:
a). Change the different structure = We read, write, and learn vocabulary.
